Meet us where River Grove history is housed
Transport yourself back to the 1800s prairie life by visiting River Grove's Historical House and Barn, a beautifully restored historic home now serving as museum.
Learn all about River Grove history and how people lived during second half of the 19th century by visiting this Italianate-style, two-story home, which was restored to look just as it did in the 1880s, according to research into the home's original owners conducted by the River Grove Historical Commission.
Originally built for Frederick Dohrmann in 1875 with a columned front porch and arched windows, the home was acquired by River Forest Village Clerk Henry Buckman and his wife Bertha in 1890, building two additions to the house and a barn on the property. The Buckman family owned the home until 1992. Three years later, the property was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Free tours are provided on the first Sunday of every month from May to October (1pm to 4pm). You can also schedule a free, private tour by calling the Village of River Grove at 708-453-8000.
There is no cost to visit the River Grove Historical House and Barn, but you should schedule a tour in advance.
The restoration of the Historical House and Barn is a passion project of the Village of River Grove in partnership with members of the River Grove Historical Commission. It will be a volunteer who guides you through the Historical House when you visit!
Located at 8455 Grand Ave. in River Grove, the Historical House is just a four-minute walk from the River Grove Stop on the Metra.
