Get Off the Grid in Riverside

Riverside is not only a darling village; it’s a National Historic Landmark! Yes, that’s right; the entire village is a National Historic Landmark, having been designed by the same team that created New York City’s Central Park, famous landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. Over 150 years old, the Village of Riverside is one of the country’s first planned communities.

The beautiful and unique village of  Riverside has over 400 gas-powered street lights, lots of green spaces and a famous water tower, which is now a museum. Just right off the BNSF Metra line, Riverside is so easy to get to from Chicago and perfect for a bike ride. Enjoy the village’s natural beauty in full by taking a tour through the Frederick Law Olmsted Society of Riverside.

Get your art and shopping fix in Riverside at Higgins Glass Studio, a family-owned Riverside institution that’s been making gorgeous glass masterpieces since the 1940s, then satisfy your sweet tooth with a trip to Aunt Diana’s Old Fashioned Fudge or London Ice Cream Shop, but leave some room for dinner. You’ll love the Italian fare at La Barra or the upscale American food at The Chew Chew, a local favorite. Do not miss out on Quincy Street Distillery either. The region’s only distillery, Quincy Street Distillery makes artisanal spirits and liquors, as well as offers cocktails, tastings and tours. Grab a bottle from the distillery’s attached shop to take home as a souvenir.
