Founded in 1869, Maywood has a rich history shaped by architecture, military service and civil rights. The village is home to a notable collection of historic architecture, including 26 significant homes and buildings mapped throughout Maywood and several properties recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.
Maywood was also the birthplace of architect Walter Burley Griffin, who later worked in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Oak Park studio and went on to help design Canberra, Australia’s capital city. The village is also closely connected to the 192nd Tank Battalion, whose local soldiers served during World War II, and to civil rights leader Fred Hampton, who grew up in the community.
If you're new to Maywood, a good afternoon might include jerk chicken on Fifth Avenue, a look at Richard Hunt's sculpture outside the library and a stop at a longtime drive-in. Here are six places to get started.
