Explore Wolf Road Prairie Nature Preserve

You might not expect to find an 82-acre nature preserve right in the middle of the suburbs, but that's exactly what makes Wolf Road Prairie so interesting.

Located near 31st Street and Wolf Road, the preserve is home to more than 360 native plant species, with prairie, savanna and wetland habitats. In the fall, the tall grasses turn golden, offering a different kind of scenery from the usual tree-lined walking paths.

One of the more interesting features is the network of old concrete sidewalks crossing the southern part of the prairie. They're remnants of a neighborhood development planned in the 1920s that was never completed. Today, they offer a glimpse into the area's history as you explore.

Keep in mind that Wolf Road Prairie is a walking-only preserve, and bicycles and pets aren't allowed. The paths can also be uneven, so comfortable walking shoes are a good idea. Check the Save the Prairie Society's visitor information before heading out. The preserve is free to visit and open daily from sunrise to sunset.

Walk or Bike Along Salt Creek

If you're looking for a longer walk or somewhere to ride your bike, the Salt Creek Trail System is another great option near Westchester.

The trail system connects several forest preserves throughout the western suburbs, with a mix of paved paths and wooded trails. Bemis Woods-North, located on Wolf Road just south of 31st Street, is a convenient place to start.

Here, you can follow the creek through the woods, cross pedestrian bridges and enjoy the changing leaves. For a shorter outing, the Forest Preserves of Cook County recommends an introductory hike of just over 1.7 miles that starts and ends at Bemis Woods-North. The route is unpaved with rolling terrain.

For cyclists, the broader trail system offers plenty of room to explore. Be sure to check the trail map beforehand, since conditions and surfaces vary along the route.

Spend an Afternoon at a Neighborhood Park

Sometimes, you don't need an extensive trail system to enjoy a nice fall day. Community Park, located at 10201 Bond Street, is a good option for families. With a playground, sports fields and open space, there's plenty of room for kids to play or for a casual afternoon outside.

You can also visit Mayfair Park, located near Mayfair and Wakefield streets. Along with its playground, the park features pickleball and lighted tennis courts on a first come first serve basis. Both are easy options if you're looking to get outside for a bit without planning a full day of activities.

Grab Coffee or Lunch in Westchester

Before heading out to explore Westchester's parks and trails, fuel up with a stop at Aviator Coffee & Cocktails. Grab a morning coffee before walking through Wolf Road Prairie or exploring the Salt Creek Trail System. It's an easy way to start your fall outing on the right foot.

When it’s time for lunch, stop by Alpine Food Shop at 10712 W. 31st Street.

This family-run Italian deli is a longtime Westchester favorite, especially for its signature Alpine sub. Made with ham, salami, capocollo, provolone and a homemade oil-and-vinegar dressing, it's a local staple for good reason.

Whether you're picking up lunch before heading to the trails or grabbing a sandwich on your way home, Alpine is worth adding to your Westchester plans.

Alpine Food Shop's Westchester location offers dine-in and pickup options. Check its current hours before visiting, as the deli is closed on Mondays.

Enjoy Fall in Westchester

You don't have to plan an elaborate trip to enjoy fall in Westchester. Between Wolf Road Prairie, the Salt Creek trails and Westchester's neighborhood parks, there are plenty of places to get outside and enjoy the season. And when the weather doesn't cooperate, families can head to Eden Lanes for some indoor fun and a friendly game of bowling.
