Khyber Pass

1031 Lake St.
Oak Park, IL 60301

Meet us for a culinary journey

Khyber Pass is an Indian restaurant with a Pathan twist, honoring the delicious flavors of the actual Khyber Pass, an ancient passageway into the Indian subcontinent, connecting Pakistan to Afghanistan. Indulge in the flavor of the Khyber Pass, which has seen the crossing of invaders, traders and nomads for centuries, all of whom having left their cultural and culinary influences on the region.

The menu of Oak Park’s Khyber Pass uses fresh meats and vegetables with simple spices, roasted in a barrel-shaped clay oven over charcoal, in the tradition of the Pathan people, also known as Pashtuns,  a nomadic ethnic group residing along the mountainous Khyber Pass.

While all of Khyber Pass's menu is delicious, the chicken vindaloo is a particular favorite, as is the frontier gosht. Be sure to order some garlic naan and samosas for the full dining experience!

Khyber Pass Owner Malik Jawid emigrated from Pakistan to Chicago in 1987 and started his work in the restaurant industry as a busboy at an Indian restaurant. There he learned the ropes of the restaurant, working his way up to manager and experiencing the nuances of Indian and Pakistani cuisine.

Jawid discovered the location of his own restaurant by chance, stumbling on Lake Street after a wrong turn took him to Oak Park. The rest is history. He opened Khyber Pass in 1995, bringing the flavors of India and Pakistan to the village.
