That’s right, you can rev up in the morning with a coffee alongside the café’s sleek fireplace, then unwind in the evening with a cocktail as you nestle in one of the comfy chairs. Common Coffeehouse Drinks

The most common type of coffee is drip coffee, in which hot water is slowly dripped over ground coffee beans through a filter. When you want to try something different, coffee drinkers can consider these options:

  • Pour over entails hand-pouring hot water over coffee grounds, giving precise control over water temperature, pouring speed, and brewing time.

  • Espresso is much stronger in flavor and caffeine than coffee and brewed by forcing nearly boiling water through finely ground espresso beans, which creates a concentrated beverage. This is the base for many coffee drinks.

  • Latte is one of the most popular espresso drinks: An espresso shot is poured with steamed milk and a small amount of milk foam added on top.

  • Flat white, which coffee shops in both Australia and New Zealand take credit for, is like a latte but with less milk and only the thinnest layer of foam.

  • Cappuccino is made with equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and thick foam.

  • Cortado is a small, espresso-based coffee drink originating in Spain, made with equal parts espresso and steamed milk, resulting in a balanced and smooth flavor. The name comes from the Spanish word cortar, meaning "to cut," referring to the milk "cutting" the intensity of the espresso.

  • Americano is a simple mix of espresso and water. It was invented in World War II when European baristas added water to their espresso to give American soldiers a less concentrated flavor.

  • Mocha refers to a variety of espresso-based drinks made with added chocolate.

  • Café au lait, a traditional French drink, is equal parts strong coffee and steamed milk.

  • Macchiato, which means “spotted” in Italian, is an espresso served with a spot of milk or foamed milk.

  • Pingado is the Brazilian version of macchiato: a shot of espresso or strong coffee into which a small amount of milk has been dripped (pingado in Portuguese).
